What are stretch fabrics?

Stretch fabrics are materials that can expand in one or more directions and return to their original shape. This elasticity comes from either the knit structure (like jersey) or the addition of elastane to woven fabrics (like stretch poplin or stretch denim).

Properties of stretch fabrics:

• Elastic in one or both directions
• Comfortable and follows body movement
• Often easy-care and wrinkle-resistant
• Require special handling when sewing

Stretch fabrics are suitable for:

• T-shirts, tops and dresses
• Leggings, pants, skirts
• Sportswear and loungewear
• Any sewing project that needs freedom of movement

Sewing tips for stretch fabrics:

• Use a stretch or jersey needle (size 70–80)
• Sew with a stretch stitch, like zigzag or overlock
• Do not stretch the fabric while sewing
• Stabilize edges with seam tape or interfacing if needed

Care instructions for stretch fabrics:

• Wash at 30–40°C depending on material
• Use mild detergent
• Avoid tumble drying to preserve elasticity
• Iron only on low heat if necessary

If you are unsure whether your pattern needs a stretch fabric, check if the garment is meant to fit closely or needs ease of movement. In that case, elastic fabrics are often the best choice.
