🧘‍♀️ Bi-Stretch Fabrics – Properties, Sewing Tips, and Pattern Suggestions

What are bi-stretch fabrics?

Bi-stretch fabrics can stretch both lengthwise and crosswise. This makes them ideal for form-fitting, comfortable garments that move with the body. They are often made of cotton or synthetic blends with elastane or Lycra for added stretch and recovery.

Properties of bi-stretch fabrics:

  • Stretchable in both directions
  • Ideal for body-hugging, comfortable clothing
  • Excellent shape retention
  • Easy-care and pleasant to wear
  • May become slightly see-through when overstretched

Suitable for:

  • Leggings, sportswear, leotards
  • Stretch dresses, shirts, underwear
  • Children's clothing with extra mobility
  • Fitted sewing patterns

Sewing tips:

  • Use a stretch or super-stretch needle
  • Sew with stretch stitches (e.g. overlock or zigzag)
  • Do not overstretch fabric while sewing
  • Stabilize seams with tape if needed
  • Recommended for confident sewists

Care instructions:

  • Machine wash at 30 °C
  • Do not tumble dry
  • Iron on low heat from the reverse side

My tip for bi-stretch fabrics:

For best results, use an overlock machine – but a regular sewing machine with the right settings works just fine, too.
