bi-stretch
🧘♀️ Bi-Stretch Fabrics – Properties, Sewing Tips, and Pattern Suggestions
What are bi-stretch fabrics?
Bi-stretch fabrics can stretch both lengthwise and crosswise. This makes them ideal for form-fitting, comfortable garments that move with the body. They are often made of cotton or synthetic blends with elastane or Lycra for added stretch and recovery.
Properties of bi-stretch fabrics:
- Stretchable in both directions
- Ideal for body-hugging, comfortable clothing
- Excellent shape retention
- Easy-care and pleasant to wear
- May become slightly see-through when overstretched
Suitable for:
- Leggings, sportswear, leotards
- Stretch dresses, shirts, underwear
- Children's clothing with extra mobility
- Fitted sewing patterns
Sewing tips:
- Use a stretch or super-stretch needle
- Sew with stretch stitches (e.g. overlock or zigzag)
- Do not overstretch fabric while sewing
- Stabilize seams with tape if needed
- Recommended for confident sewists
Care instructions:
- Machine wash at 30 °C
- Do not tumble dry
- Iron on low heat from the reverse side
My tip for bi-stretch fabrics:
For best results, use an overlock machine – but a regular sewing machine with the right settings works just fine, too.
